Do I need grief counseling?

You may be wondering if grief counseling will help with these feelings or help “speed up” the grieving process. Others may have told you that you need to see a grief counselor. Knowing when to seek professional help can be confusing. Below are some items to consider if you are unsure whether grief counseling will help you.

(It should be noted that many of the following are not a concern immediately after death, but may be more of a concern if they persist months or years after death.)

• Do you have frequent suicidal thoughts or wish you could die so you could be with your loved one?

• Are you worried about how you are coping with the death of a loved one?

• Has your sleep, appetite, or weight changed significantly since your loved one died?

• Have you had severe confusion or a hard time concentrating since the death of a loved one?

• Do you constantly feel intense anger or paralyzing sadness?

• Do others tell you that you are not coping well?

If you feel that many of the above apply to you, it may be time to seek professional help. The most important way to know if you may need help is if you feel that your quality of life has changed significantly, and negatively and that you are unable to get relief over time. have failed.

Most people will not want or need grief counseling. However, others find comfort in having a neutral place to go where you can talk to a professional about your thoughts and concerns. Some people seek it immediately after death – others wait months or years.

Grief counseling can be short-term or long-term. This may include individual, family, or group therapy. Many clients only come for one or two sessions to ask questions, others come regularly for months. There is no set plan for grief counseling. You can work with a counselor to find what will be most helpful for you.

If you would like to speak with a grief counselor over the phone or in person, you can contact Amanda Nelsen, CMHC at amanda.nelsen@securitynational.com or 801-718-1520. We do not charge for our grief services.
